April 2, 2011: Over 150 people attended a consultation exhibition at 2 Market Place, Malton, on Saturday, April 2.
Community consultations typically attract people worried about a proposed development. On Saturday, having seen the designs and had the proposals explained to them, people were asked to record their opinion. Of those forms that were handed in on the day: 49 were in favour, eight in favour with reservations, one against.
This is highly unusual for a public planning consultation, where usually it is the people minded to object, who attend. The plan for the livestock market site was accepted as sensitive in scale and design to the historic heritage, while breathing new life into the commercial heart of the town by encouraging more local people and visitors to use its full range of shops and services.
The vast majority saw the stark choice facing this community, between this redevelopment that will be a seamlessly well-connected extension to the existing town centre, and a one-stop-shop mega Tesco marooned in Wentworth Street car park. There is not capacity for both. The response on the day was solidly in favour of the livestock market site, and we continue to welcome feedback by post, email and online.
