Background
West Herts College wishes to redevelop its campus in Hemel Hempstead. It is long established and will remain on the same site. That is the first thing to emphasise. As one of Hemel’s important institutions, its commitment to stay gives the town a vote of confidence.
But its 1960s buildings are tired, inefficient and no longer fit for their purpose. The development plan is to replace them, while staying open to young and adult students, with an ultra-modern, purpose-designed skills training establishment that will be uplifting
in its architecture, create a strong new link between the old town and the new, provide access and facilities for the public, and be educationally and economically relevant.
The college has appointed Taylor Young to prepare a hybrid planning application incorporating proposals for new college facilities and a mix of new residential options on the current campus site.
